In 1937, the East Yorkshire village of Bishop Burton played host to the production of a short play about forbidden love in the Early Victorian period.

Produced and narrated by Ernest Symmons of the Beverley Picture Playhouse, and acted out by local people, it follows two young lovers who defy the girl’s angry father.

In the days before Coronation Street and Eastenders, this was as close to a fictional scandal an East Yorkshire audience could get!
