A duo whose rootsy and rhythmic repertoire is as wide as their tour schedule play a rare hometown show next week with an appearance at The Back Room in Cottingham.

Pete and Frankie, the two halves of Mambo Jambo, are familiar faces on the Hull music scene and turned professional 15 years ago. Their talent has taken them across Europe, embracing new influences as they have progressed, but recently local performances have been less frequent.

The show at The Back Room on Monday November 9 will be their first in East Yorkshire since they sang to celebrate the opening last month of the Travellers Rest coffee shop and deli in Beverley. Before that they were among the festival favourites at Cornucopia at Burton Constable Hall and in between they joined the Costa Del Folk Festival in Carvoeiro, Portugal.

Over the years Mambo Jambo have played venues from Bridlington to Brazil and Cardiff to Cuba. Frankie says the international schedule has eased in recent years giving the duo a chance to build their reputation in the UK, and they are as committed as ever to sharing their sounds as widely as possible.

She said: “As musicians it’s important to travel a lot and get around the country. We love playing music and we find the travelling very interesting, meeting a lot of other musicians along the way.

“The Back Room is a lovely venue because of the sound, the intimacy and the atmosphere. Being a musician himself, Paul the owner knows these things make a real difference.”

Paul Sutton, owner of The Back Room, said: “Mambo Jambo have taken sounds and influences from different countries and genres to create something which is unique. They are both very accomplished performers and we’re expecting a feast of lively acoustic music.”

The support will be Hull-based singer-songwriter Lucy Marshall, who is building a following locally and among festival audiences across the UK with her mix of covers and original material.
