An English couple who have built a big country blues following throughout Europe but remain largely unknown in their homeland arrive in Cottingham next week for the only Yorkshire date on their current tour.

Deborah and Ashley Dow, who formed Rag Mama Rag nearly 25 years ago, now live in France and have embarked on a UK tour which takes in The Back Room in Hallgate, Cottingham, on Monday October 26.

Their repertoire has its roots in the blues of the 1920s and 30s and also encompasses Mississippi blues, East Coast ragtime and early white country influences. Their standard stage layout allows for a bass drum, three guitars, ukulele, washboard and “two comfortable chairs with no arms.”

The support act is M G Greaves, whose career has embraced a wide range of bands and styles and whose songs have been recorded by The Beautiful South.

Paul Sutton, owner of The Back Room, said: “Mike Greaves has played here a few times before and is one of Hull’s great local talents but this will be a first appearance here by Rag Mama Rag.

“Their music is lively and infectious and they’re really polished performers who seem to spend most of the year on the road, so it promises to be another excellent show.”
