The UK’s biggest tall ship regatta could be coming to Hull in 2017.

A campaign has been launched for the city to host the start of the The Apprentice Ship Cup in the City of Culture year. The regatta is the biggest in the UK, with as many as 400 apprentices from all over the world sailing the ships along the British coastline.

The charity MAST is behind the event, and chairman Jim Graves says Hull is the perfect location:

“Bringing something in like tall ships definitely fits in with the City of Culture. If you’re bringing youngsters into the city from China, France and Holland, that multicultural mix is not that dissimilar to how Hull was during its heyday as a trading port.

“For a weekend you will have tall ships in, so people will come down to the riverfront to see what’s happening. That in itself is a major marketing tool.”

He added that they want local residents and businesses to be a part of the event:

“What we need is more businesses to come forward and say ‘yes, we want to send two or three of our apprentices.’

“We want people from Hull and the surrounding area to get involved to make this event the biggest part of the first step of helping young people to develop themselves for their future.”
