With the forecast of a heatwave next week, there has never been a better time to host a big old-fashioned backyard bash. And whether you’re planning a quiet family gathering or a naughty knees-up, we have some great tips to suit every budget. So, get those deckchairs out of the shed, dust down the BBQ and make this summer one to remember.

Pre-party planning

If you’re reading this article, you’re already well on your way to organising the perfect summer garden party. However, there are just a few things you may want to do beforehand to ensure the big day runs smoothly. Make a list of essentials that you’ll need, such as the food you’re going to serve, and if you will need any extra chairs for Grandma or her dog.

Why not brighten up your garden with some charming homemade decorations? Either get the kids crafting some adorable partywares, or head down to the shops where there are bound to be some affordable embellishments to cheer up the place.

A few hours before

It’s time to bring out the bunting and get prepping those finger sandwiches. Cold food can be made a couple of hours before your guests arrive and then kept fresh in the fridge; however, if you’re firing up the grill, you may want to wait until they all arrive.

If you’re providing the tipple, be sure it’s already chilled by popping in the fridge at this point too. Alternatively, fill a large bucket or clean bin with ice for a fun and practical storage solution for bottles and cans.

Is your summertime soirée going to continue into the night? Be sure to hang up some outdoor fairy lights to create a beautiful ambiance for your guests to enjoy. In the meantime, have some comfortable provisions for when it gets a bit chilly; stock up on the blankets, or remind your friends to bring their own.

An hour before

With all of this organising, it may slip your mind to get yourself ready to party. Be sure to allow time to get your glad rags on and remember to apply lots of sun cream if it’s a hot day.

At the party

When your guests turn up, you may want to hand them a drink and show the way through to the celebrations. After food is served, it’s time to relax, play a few games and turn up the music!

Using an online service such as Spotify for your playlist will make it easy to select brilliant summer tunes to suit all tastes, from teenage chart hits to Dad’s heavy rock anthems!

Keep everyone entertained with some traditional garden games such as Giant Jenga, Swingball or Quoits. Meanwhile, make your own bowls set by using tin cans and a cricket ball.

However you celebrate this summer, we’d love to see your snaps. Share them with us on Facebook and Twitter.
