Women across East Yorkshire are to be given better access to breast screening.

Appointments will now be available in community locations as well as on evenings and weekends.

Advanced Practitioner, Helen Warren, hopes more women will come forward for the tests: “A lot of the new sites that we’ve got are tied into supermarkets, such as the one at Kingswood. What we’re hoping is that ladies will be more encouraged to come because it’s part of their routine shopping day. Just coming out, having your screening, then popping to the shops afterwards.

“Breast screening programmes save, on average, around 1,400 lives a year. So it’s really important that women have good access to the service locally.”

She says 30% of appointments aren’t attended: “It’s just such an important way to pick up on really tiny changes. Some of the cancers we find are millimetres small and if they’re deep within the breast no one would have a chance of picking that up symptomatically or knowing. It’s those small ones really that we find are the really important ones because that’s how we save lives.”
