East Riding Council is exploring options to ensure the future of Skidby Windmill.

They’re wanting to make the most of its heritage and make sure it has a sustainable future, by calling for organisations to come forward with ideas.

Darren Stevens, Head of Culture and Information, says they’re not necessarily selling the site, but are considering alternatives: “We currently own and run it, and it runs at a loss. This is another reason why we want to look at it because obviously we have to do the right thing for our taxpayers. We have to consider whether there is somebody out there who could run the site in a different way in the future, in a way that will cost the taxpayers less, but at the same time protect this really important and iconic building.”

He says they’ve spoken to staff at the site: “Whenever you do something like this, we understand that it can create uncertainty, but the staff were very understanding. We are making sure that everybody involved at the site is being kept up to date, fully briefed and aware of what’s going on. But for the time being, it’s business as usual.”
