A brand new, magical adaptation of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is coming to Hull Truck Theatre this festive season.

We spoke with Rosa Hesmondhalgh (above left), who plays Ebenezer Scrooge’s former fiance, Belle, to find out more about this enchanting play.

Can you tell us a little bit more about your character?

Belle is Scrooge’s ex-girlfriend. The pair fall in love way before Scrooge’s love for money takes hold.

During the scenes with the Ghost of Christmas Past, Belle appears and Scrooge has to look back at what he gave up and what he lost because of his obsession with money. It is one of his biggest regrets.

How have you found playing Belle?

It’s been really fun to make her from Hull. I think it’s quite easy to write her as a woman who doesn’t say much and just stands and looks pretty.

However, the show’s adapter, Deborah McAndrews, has done a brilliant job and written a great scene where Belle tells Scrooge exactly how it is and how she isn’t going to stand for his behaviour. It’s been nice to do that in a gritty, Yorkshire accent.

What’s your favourite thing about Christmas?

My favourite part of Christmas has been the same every single year since I was old enough to stand, and that’s decorating the Christmas tree.

In my family, it’s a massive thing that my mum and I always do together. We go and buy a tree from one of those farms, we take it home and we decorate it with the same decorations every year and listen to festive music.

That sounds lovely! So, when are you putting your tree up this year?

Well, that’s the sad thing. I’m away from home this year, so I don’t think I’ll be getting one. To be fair, being here with all these amazing actors is a very good substitute.

And what’s your least favourite part of Christmas?

Not being able to get anywhere on Saturdays! You just nip out to buy your bits and everyone else is last-minute Christmas shopping. You can’t move for people.

Lastly, why should people come along to see A Christmas Carol?

It’s a really wonderful, new and exciting version of the classic tale. I feel like I know the story so well from my childhood, but I feel like this one is full of surprises.

There’s something for everyone in there. The music, in particular, is one of the best parts of the show. It’s A Christmas Carol like no one has ever seen before.

You can see A Christmas Carol from Friday 1 December 2017 until Saturday 6 January 2016. To purchase tickets and find out more information, visit the Hull Truck Theatre website.
