Three Hull-based construction apprentices have made the final of a prestigious national building competition.

Matthew Stanford, a builder, decorator and painter, Jamie-Leigh Lister, of NHS Estates, and Ryan Cook, a bricklayer, have all secured a spot among the last 18 in next month’s Young Builder of the Year awards.

The Hull Training and Adult Education trio are set to visit the House of Commons, where the winning contestants will be revealed.

Youthbuild UK’s 16th edition of the awards is being staged on Thursday, October 15. The ceremony will celebrate the accomplishments of youngsters who have overcome obstacles to get a building sector job or succeed in training.

Rosie Nicola, a Hull city councillor whose special responsibilities include skills and learning, spoke of her immense pride in the trio.

Cllr Nicola says the nominations underline how the success of apprenticeships are to youngsters, local economies and businesses alike.

She says that Hull remains committed to offering youngsters on-the-job training opportunities to equip them for successful working futures.
