Hull will host a day of international athletics this weekend.

More than 130 of the world’s top athletes will take part in the track and field event at Costello Stadium on Sunday, 31 August.

One of those athletes will be Hull’s own field star Alex Smith, who will be throwing the hammer for Great Britain. Alex won a Silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and also represented his country at the London 2012 Olympics and this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

American Shot putter Zac Lloyd will be appearing at the competition as well as his compatriots Ronald Taylor (Long Jump) and Donald Brookins (110m Hurdles). All three are ranked in the top 20 in the world in their events.

Other countries being represented include France, Senegal, Mali, Morocco, USA, Italy, Greece and Cyprus.

The event, which is free to spectators, takes place between 1.45pm and 5pm. There will be a variety of stalls and refreshments available all day.

The athletics event completes a summer of sport for Hull, following on from the Queens Baton Relay, British Cycling’s National Race Championships and the Sky Ride.

Before the event, Kingston Upon Hull Athletics Club will host a Junior Open from 10am to 12.50pm. Here, local junior athletes from Hull will pit themselves against their counterparts from across the country.
