Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart believes northern devolution will not work unless Hull and the East Riding are included in the plans.

Mr Stuart wants to see a Greater Yorkshire devolution settlement and believes it is crucial that Hull and the East Riding are included in the northern devolution proposals.

He said: “I don’t think Greater Leeds should be able to go ahead. We need a Greater Yorkshire devolution settlement otherwise North and East Yorkshire will be left on the sidelines. We won’t have enough size or economic clout.

“The whole thrust of building this Northern Powerhouse is east-west connectivity. The Hull to Liverpool access. We’re beginning to realise just how powerful and economically important this region is, and now we need to pull it all together.”

Mr Stuart revealed he would rather see no northern devolution plan if East Yorkshire is not included in the proposals.

He added: “Those in West Yorkshire need to realise they are not going to be able to go ahead without us. It isn’t going to happen. It’s either nothing or Greater Yorkshire…

“The north’s a wonderful place to live. What we’ve just go to do is make it all work, so that we can deliver the economic benefits for the area and the nation. I don’t want any more hand-outs and why won’t the Government do this or that, let’s get the powers in place, let’s make sure we get a fair share of national investment.”
