Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) is to press ahead with plans for a new helicopter after it received its largest ever single donation.

The charity was handed a cheque for £944,254 by Yorkshire Building Society, following a successful affinity account initiative.

YAA is currently looking at raising funds for a future replacement helicopter for one of its current aircraft – and chairman Peter Sunderland says the generous donation will go some way to covering the cost.

He adds everyone at the charity is overwhelmed by the support of the society, which has donated more than £2 million since 2007.

The latest sum of £944,254 was raised through deposits placed in its YAA affinity savings accounts over the past year.

Gary Lacey, savings product manager at the society, says it is proud to be responsible for the largest ever donation to the YAA. He claims it will continue to support good causes across Yorkshire.

YAA serves a population of approximately five million people across four million acres. It operates two air ambulances in Yorkshire, providing fast medical response to patients who have received major trauma.
