A Goole councillor is calling for a freeze on multi-occupancy homes.

Councillor Keith Moore is concerned over the poor living conditions some people face.

The Goole North Ward councillor says: “People in Goole are saying to me quite loudly and quite strongly that we need a moratorium on HMOs (homes multiple-occupancy). It’s a small town, we’ve seen an explosion of these over the past three or four years and enough’s enough and want an end to them.”

He explains what’s highlighted the problem: “Noise nuisance, littering, de-valuing properties, and of course the big fear that there’s going to be a fire, and if it’s in a terrace block then the chances are that will not just affect that property but could spread right through the whole block.

“In one property they even have people living in the loft space. The council’s enforcement officers did an unannounced visit and also found out that there was a gangmaster involved who had all the tenants’ passports. There was pretty nasty stuff going on there.”
