A Hull councillor has warned that rush-hour traffic congestion is going to get worse unless more people start using public transport.

Although traffic improvement works are due to take place along the A63 to help address the issue, Hull City Council councillor Martin Mancey is not sure what other action can be taken to relieve congestion on other busy routes around the city.

He said: “I don’t believe the vast majority of our citizens would want to sacrifice buildings and houses and so on for road-widening schemes. It’s about encouraging people to use public transport where suitable.

“We need to encourage commuters, where possible, and I appreciate it’s not possible for everyone to use public transport instead of bringing their cars or trying to bring their cars into the city centre and that’s one of the reasons why we’ve provided bus lanes.

“Now we’ve got a situation with increasing car ownership. It’s not just families having one car, there’s some families with one, two, three, four cars. There is just not the road space available to continue to cater for ever increasing vehicle ownership.

“Our ambition to continue the prosperity of the population means as better-paid jobs and more jobs are created, that will inevitably mean more people buying cars, in some cases, second cars, so the problem will increase.”
