There are calls for a ban on the Humber Bridge tolls during Hull’s City of Culture year.

Grimsby MP Melanie Onn believes it would encourage more visitors to the area, and has written to local MPs saying it’s vital they work together.

She thinks both sides of the river would benefit: “If we want to achieve that kind of growth, that success and working together as a north and south bank, then the tolls shouldn’t continue to be a barrier. So let’s use it as an exercise, let’s use it as a trial. I’m not saying it has to be there forever, but let’s see what those benefits could be.”

She says it makes sense for the surrounding areas to capitalise on the title: “There’s a lot that we could achieve in terms of bringing the benefits of Hull being the City of Culture to the south bank as well, and I want to see Grimsby thriving, so any benefits that Hull are getting, I want to see us getting a little bit of it as well.”

I would have thought this to be an ideal position to help boost the profits and pay back the loan on the bridge. This may be the only real benefit from us being the shitty of culture.
