Companies throughout East Riding and Hull are being invited to a special careers event next week.

Green Port Hull is hosting the afternoon at Hall Road’s Orchard Centre on Tuesday, March 15 between 1.30pm and 3pm.

It is aimed at companies who can offer work placements to would-be candidates or hire new recruits. The local business promotion partnership want firms to learn how they can help to create a better, more sustainable future for Hull companies.

The event organisers’ Pathways to Employment scheme launched in January and has already seen Unity Training delivering tailor-made work programmes for 20 trainees.

The initiative entails intensive training in the engineering, renewables and manufacturing sectors, followed by work placements – both five weeks each.

Bob Ferraby, Green Port Growth Programme’s Skills and Development Lead, said: “This is a brilliant way for businesses to put a potential employee to the test, and if they decide to take them on full-time a 20% subsidy is offered to the business for the first 12 months of employment.

“We aim to sign up another 20 candidates and we need the support of more employers for the success of the scheme.”

Martin Mancey, a Hull councillor with special responsibilities for jobs, said: “As the council works closely with companies including Siemens and Jobcentre Plus to deliver a revolutionary skills and training overhaul, we want the long-term unemployed people of Hull and the East Riding to be able to access a whole range of new career opportunities.

“The Pathways to Employment Programme is an excellent opportunity for potential employers to host a short-term work trial when looking to recruit new candidates, while offering trainees the opportunity to develop their skills within this specific industry.”
