Funnywoman Jo Brand is preparing to embark on a ‘Hell of a Walk’ that will take her across the country from Hull to Liverpool.

The London-born comedienne, writer and actress is due to set off from Hull for the Sport Relief challenge on January 22. She hopes to complete the 150-mile walk in just one week, clocking up around 60,000 steps per day.

Her coast-to-coast hike is to be filmed for a BBC programme that will be screened ahead of this year’s Sport Relief weekend in March.

Brand, who worked as a psychiatric nurse for 10 years before moving into stand-up comedy full-time, hopes her trek will raise funds for and highlight the support Sport Relief gives to projects related to mental health issues.

Warming up for her challenge, the 58-year-old jokes that it was only when she began training that she realised she wasn’t actually the “national fitness icon” she’d always thought herself to be.

Comparing her body to a temple – large and non-moving – she adds: “The realisation is gradually dawning that I have to walk a very, very, very long way, with many days back-to- back using only my poor little legs to carry me, and that’s a gruesome thought.”
