A Goole councillor has warned that it is only a matter of time before there is a fatality on a busy East Yorkshire road.

Keith Moore says drivers need to slow down along Westfield Lane, on the outskirts of Goole, with at least one vehicle coming off the road every week. He is also calling for road improvements such as speed cameras or chicanes.

He said: “People now tend to use this road to avoid going through the centre of Goole. We’re seeing vehicles come off the road at the rate of one a week.

“It’s only a matter of time before there’s a fatality there and as much as we appeal for people to slow down, I think we also need to look at more effective measures there to enforce that slowing down.

“Please slow down because I’m sure no motorist would want to be involved in a fatality. Children use that road, there needs to be extreme care taken, especially when you’re negotiating the double bends.”

In response, Nigel Leighton, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s director of environment and neighbourhood services, said: “A significant amount of safety improvement work was carried out on this road in the recent past, and it now carries a 30mph speed limit, which was extended in 2008 to incorporate the bends as part of a local safety scheme.

“It is extremely unlikely that any further reduction in the speed limit at this point would make any difference, as adherence to the 30mph should be observed. Twenty mph speed limits are also not appropriate to introduce for rural bends.

“We would emphasise that the speed limit is a maximum and drivers may need to travel slower to travel round bends or past other road hazards.”
