Thanks to the amazing generosity of local people, an affordable space for Hull’s creative community will open its doors in the next few months.

The idea for Hub A originated over six years ago. The Something Entirely Different team realised that there was a huge need for a space for the creative people of Hull to work and connect.

This thought has recently moved closer to becoming a reality. Thanks to an incredible donation of just under £10,000 from individuals and businesses, Hub A is set to open later this year.

We caught up with someone behind the project to find out more about this exciting new development.

Can you give us some insight into what Hub A will be?

We’re going to have a shared studio space, where people can work together, collaborate and skillshare. On top of this, other areas will provide vital resources for members and non-members.

For example, we’re building a library of inspiring books, photography studio and creative suite. Our 3D printing room is a highlight, along with screen-printing facilities for merchandise and art.

£50 a month will buy you your own desk and workspace, along with access to all of these wonderful resources. Additionally, you can rent out your own office space starting from around £150.

And what does this mean for the creative people of Hull?

It can be hard for young people and freelancers to progress in their careers when they have a lack of money for resources. We aim to change that.

Meanwhile, they can also go a bit crazy if they’re cooped up at home drawing, designing and making. Hub A will allow creatives to get out of their house and meet other people.

We want to create a real community vibe, with individuals helping others with their careers and creative progress.

Allowing people to showcase their talent is something that we’ve always encouraged. We set up a page on Facebook called A Creative Hull a few years ago and have formed a digital community for those who want to share their passions.

It sounds great, and congratulations, you’ve raised enough money to help bring your idea to fruition! So, what’s the next step?

Yes, we have. Thanks to our amazing pledges on Spacehive, we’ve managed to raise just shy of £10,000, which will allow us to set up Hub A.

I’m currently waiting on a few contracts to be signed, along with the keys to the building, which will be in Hull’s Old Town.

I’m so happy that we’ve chosen the Old Town area. It’s such a great place and full of history and culture. It’s going to be receiving a lot of attention over the next year and we’re so excited to be a part of it.

Although you’ve already raised the initial funds, is there anything else that you need a hand with?

Certainly! Our fundraising is ongoing as we want to make Hub A the best it can possibly be.

In the meantime, we’re very happy to receive any creative resources such as books and equipment, as well as building materials.

We’re so thankful to those who are already behind us and we can’t wait to open Hub A’s doors in a few months’ time.
