KC has joined forces with the Hull Daily Mail to launch new awards to recognise and celebrate the success of local businesses in the region’s growing digital sector.

The inaugural Digital Awards will be held on Thursday 22nd October at @TheDock in Hull’s Fruit Market, home to C4DI (Centre for Digital Innovation), who will be hosting the event.

The evening will also mark the official opening of the £15m @TheDock development by Lastminute.com co-founder Martha Lane-Fox.

Ms Lane-Fox, who is chair of digital skills charity Go On UK, will provide a keynote speech at the event which will be hosted by BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones.

Representatives from the region’s many digital, technology and creative businesses will be among the guests.

Anita Pace, KC’s Director of Media, said: “We’re delighted to be working with the Hull Daily Mail and C4DI to present Hull’s first Digital Awards.

“KC is already powering and underpinning the growth of the region’s digital economy through the roll-out of our ultrafast fibre broadband service, KC Lightstream.

“In Hull and East Yorkshire, the digital economy is already worth £6.9 billion annually, employing more than 57,000 people.   With so much to progress made in the sector, the awards will be a true celebration and will provide the opportunity to pause and reflect on what we’ve all achieved to date.”

Hull Daily Mail Managing Director and Publisher Mike Pennington said: “The interest in and support for our first ever Digital Awards has been unparalleled, which is a clear indication of the enthusiasm there is in this region for what’s happening in the digital sector.

“At the Hull Daily Mail we have embraced the new opportunities offered by digital through our own website which has seen terrific growth in the last two years. It is a key platform along with our print editions.

“For the awards we have 11 award categories, including Young Digital Person of the Year, Best Digital Start-up and Best Digital Innovation and we expect the standard of entries to be very high. I’m looking forward to a fantastic event.”

Dominic Gibbons, Managing Director of Wykeland Group, which is behind the @TheDock development, said: “The C4DI is the focal point of @The Dock, which will be a landmark business quarter and the heart of digital technology and innovation for the region.

“It will be Hull’s first purpose-built venue for digital, technology and creative companies and will play an important part in inspiring, innovating and growing the best technical and creative minds. I can think of no better venue to host these awards.”

C4DI Co-founder Jon Moss, Co-Founder of C4DI said: “Technology and innovation are essential for any business. With the most comprehensive survey of digital businesses ever undertaken in the UK, the Tech Nation 2015 ‘Powering the Digital Economy’ report, featuring Hull as one of the top 16 digital clusters recently, the time feels right to raise the profile of the sector within our region. The Digital Awards will help to achieve that.”

More information about the awards, including awards categories and entry criteria, can be found at www.thedigitalawards.net and at www.hulldailymail.co.uk  The closing date for entries is Friday 11th September.
