Lives are being put at risk in Hull and East Yorkshire by the irresponsible motorists who still insist on using their mobile phone while driving, police say.

And new figures show hundreds of motorists have been caught doing so over the last year.

Humberside Police say they have caught 350 motorists using their hand-held phones behind the wheel in Hull and a further 410 on the roads of East Yorkshire.

The figures have been released in the wake of a four-week campaign aimed at raising motorists’ awareness of the dangers of the practice.

The campaign resulted in well over 100 tickets being issued to motorists caught flouting the law.

Humberside Police casualty reduction officer PC Barry Gardner says problems are being caused by people not having the patience to wait to read a text, take a call or search the internet on their devices.

And he says that as well as being illegal the practice is putting lives at risk on the region’s roads.
