The fantastically inspiring show, Putting the Band Back Together, is coming to Hull.

Unfolding Theatre and Little Mighty have teamed up to tell a beautiful story in the form of a live gig.

Putting the Band Back Together follows the story of Mark Lloyd, who decided to reform his old band after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The musical will be performed at Hull Truck Theatre next week. We spoke with Director Annie Rigby to find out more.

“The show moves between a sequence of songs and monologues to tell Mark’s story,” says Annie.

“Each song, which is composed by Ross Millard from The Futureheads, represents a different part of his life.”

Mark sees his life as a ten track album and the songs are played as he tells his story.

“Mark was unfortunately diagnosed with terminal cancer back in 2014,” Annie explains.

“He was a long-time friend and collaborator of the theatre company, so Putting the Band Back Together serves as a celebration and a tribute to him.”

The show explores the emotions that come with playing music:

“Many people who played in their teenage years stopped for no real reason, other than growing up with less free time,” says Annie.

“Personally, I played a lot of music when I was younger, but then gave up. And when you pick up your instrument or start singing again, the emotions you experience can be huge.”

“I was already considering making a show about people’s relationships to music and playing in bands, but Mark’s story was my true inspiration.”

Whilst working on the show, Annie tells us that she felt there was a genuine spirit in everyone:

“We must make the most of our time and spend our lives doing the things that we love.”

Annie hopes that the show will encourage more people with dusty guitars propped up in their bedrooms to pick up their passion once more.

“We’ve had quite a lot of people contact us after seeing the show who have started doing what they loved again,” she enthuses.

“Whether that’s attending open mic nights, playing football or dancing, it’s great that we’re able to reignite old interests.”

Audiences also have a chance to get directly involved in the show:

“Hundreds have joined our house band,” Annie explains.

“We ask people who want to be involved to arrive a couple of hours before the show starts. They can then rehearse with our band and play in front of their local audience on the night.”

Whether you want to get involved or just cheer on local heroes, this show promises to create a vibrant, heartwarming experience.

“People should come along because it’s a fun, silly show with an important message. If you love music, it’s definitely the one for you. We have some really beautiful songs.”

Putting the Band Back Together is at Hull Truck Theatre from Wednesday 15 to Thursday 16 March. Tickets are £12.50 or £10.50 for concessions.
