The MP for East Hull, Karl Turner, is launching an initiative designed to help young jobseekers in the area today.

Young adults who voluntarily enroll on ‘Our Community’ will get careers coaching from Communitas, an educational subsidiary of the Community union, to help them with CV writing and interview technique.

They’ll also be offered a work experience placement with an East Hull employer, of between two and eight weeks.

It’s hoped the scheme will benefit youngsters who are struggling to get onto the career ladder because of a lack of workplace experience.

Speaking to KCFM, Mr Turner admitted it’s not really an MP’s job to get his constituents jobs – but he says it’s essential political and business leaders do more to promote their area as a place to do business, so local people feel the benefit of economic growth:

“It’s very much my job to encourage investment in the constituency. It’s certainly a Member of Parliament’s job, in my view, encourage investment into your area. Otherwise, frankly, what’s the point of having an MP?”

“The economy is far from recovered in our area. Businesses that I speak to say that they still struggle in the North, and certainly struggle in Hull. But things are going in the right direction, as a result of which, they’re keen to get involved in trying to attract new people.”

“We’ve got a terrible situation in East Hull, where between eight and nine percent are unemployed. In terms of youth unemployment, it’s one of the highest in the country. It’s no good for government ministers to say everything’s rosy in the garden, when in fact, people in East Hull don’t feel that.”
