An East Yorkshire man has won out in a competition to find the best town crier in the country, promoting some of the county’s finest attractions in the process.

Michael Wood beat off 14 competitors to take first place in the UK Town Crier competition, which was held in Middlewich, Cheshire, at the weekend.

Mr Wood showed that he knows all there is to know about the crying game – across all the categories judged, including audience engagement, volume and clarity, and inflection.

He also scooped the Best Cry Content award, which acknowledges a crier’s skill at crafting the words of their calls.

Mr Wood, who has won the title once before, used the contest to showcase East Yorkshire’s many attractions in the stipulated 125 words or fewer.

Beverley’s “cobbled streets”, “trendy boutiques” and “gothic minster” all got a mention. He also joked that it rained just twice in Yorkshire in 2014 – the first time took three months, then the second time five months.
