An anti-fracking camp in East Yorkshire is being dismantled after demonstrators ignored an eviction notice to leave by January 7.

The protest camp was set up at Crawberry Hill, close to Beverley, around eight months ago, according to East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Crawberry Hill is close to a site where energy company Rathlin Energy hopes to drill for gas and oil in the near future.

The council said the eviction notice was served on December 2 after local residents as well as the police, landowners and a parish council had raised concerns over the camp.

Bailiffs have now started to remove caravans, tents and fencing to make sure drivers, the public and the protesters are safe, a spokesman said.

Humberside Police confirmed that it had made a number of arrests in connection with the dismantling.

Rathlin Energy said it was only carrying out some “testing operations” and that no fracking is currently taking place at Crawberry Hill.
