Tributes have been paid after one of East Yorkshire’s most loved radio stars died at the age of 93.

Radio Humberside’s Betty Smith was the oldest winner of the Sony Radio Award, which she received in 2012 with co-hosts Beryl Renwick and David Reeves.

Betty and Beryl, who was 86 when she was given the radio industry award, went on air together for the first time in 2006 after meeting Reeves on a tour of the station. They had first met at an afternoon club in Hull as widows in 1999.

Their hour-long radio show, which mixed chat and music, ran for six years.

They broadcast their last programme, a Christmas special, in 2012, but then became celebrities, appearing on TV’s One Show after they won the best entertainment show award.

This led to interviews with newspapers and offers to write and publish their life story.

Simon Pattern, BBC Radio Humberside’s managing editor, paid tribute to Betty’s kindness and brilliant sense of humour, adding that staff were saddened by the news of her death.
