East Yorkshire residents have been warned that they could face traffic chaos and electricity blackouts this weekend with a storm fast approaching.

Met Office forecasters, who have put out severe weather warnings, predict that the expected 60-70mph storm will hit the area on Saturday January 10.

One said that locals should brace themselves for possible trees and branches being downed in the strong gusts, with lorries facing particular difficulties.

The Met Office’s “yellow” warning means that residents should be ready for likely disruption.

A spokesman said that a very strong depression will probably spread quickly eastwards, bringing vigorous gusts to the north and centre of the country. They will probably abate later on Saturday after the area has seen 60-70mph gusts, he added.

The Met Office spokesman also warned that East Yorkshire households should prepare themselves for disruptions to roads and power supplies.

A combination of an extremely powerful jet stream and stormy conditions brewing in the Atlantic is behind the anticipated bad weather.
