An East Yorkshire woman who almost died after suffering domestic abuse from her partner is urging other victims to seek help.

Jade, 29, met her older partner when she was 15 and suffered verbal and physical abuse within six week of moving in with him – and was hospitalised after one attack.

She said: “I ended up in hospital in a coma. After I woke up a week-and-a-half later, I found out my partner had done that to me.

“I had a haemorrhage, brain injury, but I still didn’t believe he had done that.”

Without the support from services, Jade does not think she would be alive today and encourages other domestic victims to seek help.

She added: “Then I didn’t feel there was a way out. Now the services are so much more available and so much more understanding.

“If you’re still with the perpetrator, and obviously you don’t want them finding out you’ve spoken to anybody, they can find all different avenues to help you.”

Jade’s message comes as Humberside Police launches its domestic abuse campaign. Research indicates that less than a quarter (23 per cent) of cases are reported.

In the 12 months from July last year, Humberside Police supported 7,193 female and 1,312 domestic abuse victims.

In the 12 months from April last year, Humberside Police officers attended 6,091 domestic incidents – the equivalent of almost 17 a day.
