Lives are being put at risk as drivers across East Yorkshire flout traffic laws, as it was revealed that motorists are punished every seven minutes for speeding and careless driving.

Road safety charity Brake said that, in 2013, some 78,984 fixed penalty notices were issued to motorists in Yorkshire and the Humber.

The charity, which has launched a major new campaign calling on motorists to behave more responsibly, added that 165 people were killed and 2,234 seriously injured on roads in the region last year.

As part of Road Safety Week, Brake spoke to children of primary school age and discovered that a third said they had been hit or nearly hit on foot or on a bike.

And alarmingly, 65% said they thought that their local roads could be dangerous for walking and cycling.

Nearly three-quarters of Yorkshire motorists (72%) think that drivers generally seem in a hurry and are not considerate enough, according to research conducted by the AA..
