East Yorkshire residents are being encouraged to wear red today (Friday, February 5) to  support the fight against heart disease.

The region is home to 75,000 people with cardiovascular disease and the British Heart Foundation hopes its Wear It, Beat It fundraising campaign helps to fund further research into the condition.

Approximately 1,750 people die from heart disease in the East Yorkshire region each year, with around 450 of those aged under 75.

Jane Mooney, British Heart Foundation fundraising manager, said: “We’re trying to fulfil our ambition of funding £500,000 worth of new research in the next five years, so every pound from this campaign will go towards that and hopefully bringing the number of people suffering from cardiovascular disease down.”

She added: “If you do smoke, giving up smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, leading an active lifestyle, not having too much salt, eating fruit and vegetables, cutting out saturated fats, all of those things (can help to prevent heart disease).”
