Sausages are helping to boost East Yorkshire’s manufacturing turnover, according to new figures.

Cranswick is one of the five Lincolnshire or East Yorkshire companies in the top 10 of Insider’s new list of leading 100 manufacturers in the region.

The Helsinki Road, Hull-headquartered gourmet sausage firm took second place thanks to turnover of nearly £1 billion in the 2013/14 financial year.

Cranswick’s £994.9 million figure is only bested by Leeds-based diary giant Arla Foods’ £2.41 billion turnover.

Businesses on the new list generated turnover altogether exceeding £20 billion.

Hessle-based industrial belt maker Fenner’s sales of £729.4 million placed is in third spot, with Grimsby’s Yara UK fertiliser manufacturer in fourth.

JR Rix & Son’s heating oil business was seventh with £490.1 million turnover and McCain Foods, from Scarborough, 10th.

Other top 10 companies include Norton Healthcare, of Castleford, and Ballyvesey logistics in Doncaster.
