Hull and East Yorkshire’s asthma sufferers have been warned to be on their guard on Friday, with high rates of air pollutants likely to hit the area.

The Government has identified Yorkshire as one of the UK areas worst affected, with Greater London also suffering.

The surge is being blamed on small particles of dust from the Sahara, dirty continental air being blown over and localised motor fumes trapped close to the ground.

Local asthma patients are being asked to cut down on any physical exercise, especially outdoors, to avoid their symptoms increasing. The same advice applies to older people as well as lung and heart patients.

Government agencies say the Atlantic’s cleaner, fresher air should sweep in on Saturday but pollution rates will probably stay moderate.

With summer making an early appearance in many areas this week, surgeries have reported hay-fever patients experiencing symptoms.

The UK is expected to see its warmest day of 2015 on Friday with highs of 22C (71.6F) – hotter than Turkey and Greece.
