Travellers need more sites in East Yorkshire and Humberside, according to a local Police and Crime Commissioner.

Matthew Grove, PCC for Humberside, has said that authorities have no idea of travellers’ needs, adding that if proper sites could be designated, then tension between travellers and locals would ease.

He said that travellers would have to foot the bill for the transit sites, which would be somewhere unlikely to lead to problems, and also be made to dispose of their rubbish effectively.

Mr Grove is determined to see improvements in the situation after £40,000 was needed to clean up 80 tonnes of waste from a site at Bransholme in north Hull earlier this year.

He said that many travellers pass through Humberside and the East Riding of Yorkshire for cultural or business reasons from permanent sites elsewhere.

Mr Grove is currently in discussions with the council about how the situation can be managed.
