East Yorkshire is among the local authorities pledging funding for the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire cycle race in 2015.

On the back of the success of the Tour de France – which saw riders leave Leeds for the Grand Depart of the famous race and travel through Harrogate, York and Sheffield – Yorkshire is now putting on its own spectacle for cycling fans to again enjoy the spirit of the tour.

Bridlington has been named as one of the venues for either the stage starts or finishes alongside Leeds, Wakefield, York, Scarborough and Selby.

Scarborough Borough Council has already committed to £135,000 in funding; while City of York Council has vowed to put forward £150,000.

Further contributions are expected from Leeds City Council, Wakefield Council and North Yorkshire towards the running costs, which are likely to run into several hundreds of thousands.

But with a what could see a million spectators at the side of the roads between May 1 to 3, the hosting costs of Tour de Yorkshire are likely to be recouped in bonuses to the county’s economy.

The Tour de France, which had an overall budget of £27 million, boosted the local economy by £102 million following the July event.
