Nineteen people in East Yorkshire died waiting for an organ transplant in the 10 days to Friday, figures have revealed.

More than 48,000 people have been on the UK’s organ transplant waiting list over the last decade – and health authorities have subsequently issued an appeal for more people to sign up to be donors.

Anthony Clarkson, NHS Blood and Transplant assistant director, organ donation and nursing, said: “Even people that are waiting for a kidney transplant, their life is on hold essentially until they get that transplant. They can be treated with dialysis either at home or in hospital, but they have to have that three or four times a week and it can take five hours. So their life is significantly restricted.

“More people are signing up, we’ve got about a third of the population of the UK on the register and it is going up. But we need it to go up much more. Not only that, we need people to tell their families so that, if they die and have the potential to become a donor, their families know what they would’ve wanted, as well as being on the organ donor register.”
