Three people from East Yorkshire are being recognised in the New Year’s Honours list for helping others.

Samantha Barlow from Cottingham, Mervyn Bishop from Thorngumbald and Cyd McCarthy-Arrill from Brough will all meet members of the Royal family and receive an award.

Fitmums and Friends founder Mrs Barlow, who will receive a British Empire Medal, said: “I was absolutely shocked beyond belief because I suppose I’m so busy here working in this area. To think people outside of this area are recognising the work we are doing is absolutely amazing.”

Mrs McCarthy-Arrill, who has spent 35 years working with people with learning difficulties and complex needs, found out she had been awarded an MBE while on holiday.

She said: “My daughter telephoned us to say an official letter had arrived. She opened it and read it out. I thought it was some sort of a scam. But it was national security in the strictest confidence and we couldn’t divulge that information to anybody. So she hid it under the mat.”
