A former rugby league player is starting a 21-month jail sentence following a double burglary on a Bridlington hotel.

Darren Price, 48, returned to the seaside resort’s Sewerby Grange Hotel on the same night after discovering the safe he had stolen earlier contained only the key to another safe.

Hull Crown Court sentenced the former Castleford Tigers player, whose career was ended by an injury to his knee, on Monday October 27.

Price, of Marton View, Bridlington, stole £2,710 plus $3,000, in addition to a staff member’s iPod, from the second safe in the eight-bedroom premises in April this year.

Price was arrested on April 9 after his DNA was discovered at the scene of the burglary.

The raid meant Price had breached a suspended jail sentence imposed in January following two cases of attempted burglary with intent to steal.

Judge Jeremy Richardson said that Price’s decline from rugby stardom to crime was all his own fault.
