A colony of Gentoo penguins at The Deep aquarium in Hull has been temporarily removed until next week because of problems with fake ice.

The penguins had just been returned to their home after maintenance work before the attraction’s officials decided the new imitation ice floor was too slippery for them.

The penguins are expected to be back on display by Monday February 9, this time on a non-slip coating which should prevent falls.

The Gentoos were initially taken out on January 6 while standard maintenance work was undertaken.

But when they returned the new covering had insufficient grip to stop the birds from skidding, a spokesman for the attraction said.

The penguins were rehomed in the city for the £750,000 Kingdom of Ice exhibition, which launched last March. The Deep display comprises an outside balcony, nesting and beach sections, as well as diving and swimming pools.

They were born and reared at a Texas educational centre. Gentoos are the fastest swimmers of all penguins and can hit 36kmph at top speed.
