A landfill site operator in East Yorkshire has been fined for breaching environmental rules.

The tip in Newport was the source of several complaints from residents in the village and those in neighbouring Gilberdyke.

Many reported unpleasant smells and loud noises coming from the site over a period of several years.

City Plant Ltd, which is responsible for the operation at the landfill, was fined a total of £55,000 at Beverley Magistrates’ Court. It was also ordered to pay £17,824 in costs and a victim surcharge of £120.

Newport Parish Councillor Roy Hunt is pleased with the outcome, claiming it is good news for residents who have suffered substantially in recent years.

Back in February at an earlier hearing, City Plant Ltd admitted it had failed to comply with enforcement notices given by the Environment Agency that required it to collect landfill gas from the site.
