Investigators are currently trying to establish the cause of a fire that ripped through a derelict building in Hull.

The former New York Hotel in Anlaby Road caught ablaze shortly before 5pm on Monday.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service sent three crews to tackle the flames, which spread to a betting shop next door.

The building, which was due to be demolished because of fears regarding its safety, has been left severely damaged.

Shocked onlookers watched as firefighters battled to extinguish the blaze. Staff and customers were evacuated from the betting shop, while motorists and pedestrians were urged to stay away from the area.

No one was injured in the incident. An investigation is now underway to determine what started the fire.

Work started last September to prepare the former hotel for demolition after Hull City Council raised safety concerns over its condition.
