We had a chat with X Factor winner Joe McElderry about his upcoming performance as the iconic Joseph at Hull New Theatre.

The famous and much-loved story Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will be retold in the hall of the newly refurbished venue from Tuesday 31 October until Saturday 4 November. Bill Kenwright has produced the fascinating family-friendly musical written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Having already sold 15 million tickets on this record-breaking tour, the spectacular performance now comes to the UK City of Culture 2017.

Joe, who won the sixth series of The X Factor eight years ago, is understandably very excited about playing the lead.

Great to chat with you, Joe. What can we expect when we see Joseph?

It’s a fun, family-friendly show. It’s got a great storyline, which everyone already knows and loves. The cast is fantastic too! Joseph is just a good night out for all of the family.

The show has proven extremely popular so far, are you having fun touring?

We’re on the last leg of the tour now, so it’s quite sad. All of the cast is feeling an overwhelming sense of achievement, which is fabulous. I’ve had such a great time, it’s been truly wonderful.

How different has performing as Joseph been to singing on your own tours?

Well, I think it’s very different when you’re playing a character. It’s a different style of performing. When I’m doing my own concerts, I’m being myself, whereas I’m playing Joseph here. With musical theatre, you can hide behind the character slightly, which is quite nice actually.

Is musical theatre something you always dreamed of doing?

I studied Performing Arts at Newcastle College, but I never thought I would do musical theatre. Quite simply because I didn’t think I was any good at it – I never thought anyone would want me to do it.

So, it’s been lovely to have opened this new door with Joseph. But it’s also allowed me to focus on my own tours and albums, which is something that’s still really important to me.

How amazing for you! So, is that a hint that you’ll be back on stage as Joe soon after you hang up Joseph’s Dreamcoat?

Well, first of all I’m going to have a bit of time off; catch up with friends and family, sleep and recharge the batteries. After this, I’ll be ready to go again and have some new projects to announce.

Fantastic! So finally, why should people come to see the show?

Come along if you want a good sing-a-long and dance with your family and friends. It appeals to all ages really, it’s got happy bits and sad bits. We do it ten times a week and we still have fun, so hopefully you will too!
