Afternoon Tea is always a lovely experience. If you haven’t had one before, you receive a three-tier stand filled with finger sandwiches, pastries, cakes and a scone, along with endless pots of tea.

The setup is perfect for celebrations but can also be chosen when you simply want to enjoy a special treat. Whilst Afternoon Tea is very popular with women, it’s also great for men as well, either as part of a mixed group or even a bunch of chaps who appreciate the finer things in life.

With the arrival of Christmas week, we visited The Dancing Goat at 554 Beverley Road (opposite the Haworth Arms) to try their Festive Afternoon Tea, which presents everything you need for a Yuletide get-together.

The Festive Afternoon Tea option comes with four finger sandwiches: turkey and cranberry, smoked salmon with cream cheese, Wensleydale and apricot, and ham and mustard. These line the lower tier, along with a delicious mini cheese and onion quiche.

On the middle tier sits a fresh baked scone, which you can cover with your ideal amount of plum jam and clotted cream. Above this, on the top tier, sits a selection of festive sweet treats, including a cute little gingerbread man and a mouthwatering piece of iced fruit cake.

The thing about any Afternoon Tea is that it’s often more filling than it looks, especially when you take your time and drink as much tea as you can hold. It’s a great way to unwind, catch up with friends and, in this instance, really get into the festive spirit.

At £8.50 per head, The Dancing Goat’s Festive Afternoon Tea is competitively priced and comes with the option of including a glass of Prosecco for an extra £3. Whether you’re celebrating with old friends or just fancy a glass of bubbly with this popular Victorian ritual, why not splash out a little?

The Dancing Goat itself is a bright, spacious and welcoming place, mixing Scandinavian simplicity with subtle British decor. The surroundings are comfortable and the staff always offer a warm welcome, accommodating groups, families, bookings and walk-ins. However, please note that Afternoon Tea always needs booking a little in advance.

We found our Festive Afternoon Tea session the perfect opportunity to swap Christmas presents and generally switch off for a little while. Watching people and traffic pass by on Beverley Road can be surprisingly therapeutic, and The Dancing Goat’s tasteful Christmas decorations and lights really added to the atmosphere.

Right now and throughout the year, you can also choose from a range of other Afternoon Tea styles. These include Classic (cheese, egg mayonnaise, ham, and tuna finger sandwiches) for £7.50, Deluxe (mozzarella and pesto, chicken and cranberry, ham and mustard, and cream cheese and smoked salmon finger sandwiches) for £8.50, and Vegetarian (goat’s cheese and caramelised onion, brie and cranberry, mozzarella and pesto, and egg mayonnaise finger sandwiches) for £8.50.

Then there’s the Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea for £7.50, which is popular with men and women alike. This consists of pork pie, a selection of cheese and crackers, crisps, grapes, chutney, fruit cake and a home baked cheese scone. As for the little ones, get them involved with a Children’s Afternoon Tea for £5.50: ham, egg, Nutella, and jam sandwiches, sausage roll, mini scone with jam and cream, plus sweet treats.

If you do go this week and choose the Festive variety, you’ll also get to see some impressive origami. Green napkins are folded into the shape of Christmas trees and placed on your saucer, with a Matchmaker as the trunk. Yummy!
