Bomb disposal experts have made safe several grenades that were discovered by builders working on an East Yorkshire housing development.

Villagers in Willerby to the west of Hull were evacuated after the two World War Two devices were uncovered on Monday afternoon.

Humberside Police and other emergency personnel were alerted to the find near Great Gutter Lane at 4.35pm and they brought in specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers to find out what the devices were, whether they were dangerous and dispose of them safely.

Roads were closed in the area and remained so until around 11pm last night and the area where the grenades were found is still cordoned off as a precaution. Some of the evacuated residents have been allowed to go home.

The police and other emergency services involved in the incident thanked the public, and particularly the residents who had to leave their homes, for their patience over the incident.
