Tansterne Fishery is an excellent choice if you’re looking for an affordable, fun family day out this summer.

Located in the beautiful countryside setting of East Yorkshire, about ten miles outside of Hull, Tansterne Fishery offers a wide range of angling opportunities for all ages and abilities.

We spoke with the owner, Ron Bulless, to find out more about this fantastic fishing complex.

“We’ve been established since 2005 and have 48 pegs in total,” explains Ron. “In our three ponds, you can catch all sorts of different fish, including barbel, chub, tench, ide, roach, rudd, bream, crucian carp, perch and ghost carp.”

“We’ve got a little bit of everything for everybody. And everyone catches at Tansterne because the ponds are teaming with fish,” Ron tells us. “Majority of the catches are between 1lb-5lb; our largest is around 30lb.”

The three separate areas consist of the main pond, car park pond and canal pond. There are also toilet facilities on site, as well as free car parking close by. They even have pegs suitable for disabled anglers.

“We make sure everyone is well looked after,” Ron enthuses. “We bring people hot drinks and bacon sandwiches to their pegs on request and spend time with our visitors to ensure they’re happy and aren’t struggling with anything.”

Ron and his manager, Mike Bassett, have an impressive 50 years of experience between them when it comes to angling, and both are keen to pass this knowledge on. They offer coaching and tuition for all ages, whether you want to try your hand at the sport yourself or teach your children.

“Complete beginners are very welcome. For £30, we will teach you for three hours. This also includes all tackle, bait and your peg.”

With so much passion in his voice, it’s hard to believe it when Ron tells us he actually fell out of love with fishing for many years prior to opening up the fishery:

“My father was a very good angler and he bought me a Martin James Split Cane Rod after I passed my 11 Plus exam. But as I got older, I moved onto other sports, like golf,” Ron recalls.

“The field originally had horses in when I bought the land. However, I turned it into a fishery in memory of my father, who unfortunately died aged 58.”

Tansterne is very much a family affair, with Ron’s brother originally managing the site before he also passed away. Now, Mike, who is a long-term family friend, runs the complex. They are both eager to encourage families to visit and enjoy whats on offer.

“We don’t charge for guests, unlike a lot of other fisheries. We get a lot of families joining anglers, with partners sunbathing and relishing the outdoors,” says Ron. “Where else can you have a full day out for just £7?”

The fishery is open all year round from dawn until dusk. You can also stay at the nearby Tansterne Fishing and Touring Holiday Park. Here they offer self-catered homes, as well as bed and breakfast and half board options.
