Hull musician Paul Heaton has been attacked on social media after he decided to resign as a patron of Sheffield United over the Ched Evans rape saga.

Heaton – frontman for the Housemartins and the Beautiful South – made the move as the Blades confirmed that they would allow Evans to train with them.

The abuse is similar to that Jessica Ennis-Hill received after she announced that she would like her name removed from a stand at Bramall Lane if Evans was given a contract with the club.

Many people have accused Heaton of not being a real Sheffield United fan or giving Evans, who was recently released from his five-year jail term, a chance.

Heaton announced his decision on his Facebook page.

He said: “I firmly believe that Ched Evans has the right to rebuild his career in football, but rebuilding a career should not involve walking straight out of prison and into the shirt of the club he so badly let down.

“I believe he needs to move away and move on, and the club itself needs to lift its reputation out of the gutter.”
