There’s been tens of thousands of burglaries over the past year in Yorkshire and the Humber.

From April 2014 to March of this year, there were over 23,579 domestic burglaries in the region, with nearly 7 in 10 people in Hull knowing someone who’s been burgled.

48% of people in the city also admitted to being victims of burglary themselves.

Anthony Neary from Safe, who did the research, explains why some people don’t take preventative measures: “People are generally too busy, maybe just put it off a bit. It can be confusing with all the different security products you can buy; and cost. People maybe put off thinking it’s too expensive but it doesn’t need to be, some things are free.”

He says there’s a number of things we can do to prevent being broken into: “Keeping doors and windows locked. Not leaving tools and ladders outside in back gardens. A really popular one though is social media, telling people that you’re going away or you’re going out for the night, it’s an invitation; and not posting pictures of expensive items you’ve just bought.”
