East Yorkshire homeowners might not be protecting their properties from the winter weather.

As the cold weather hits the region, there are fears properties could be damaged by freezing temperatures.

One in eight people in the UK suffered weather-related damage to their homes during the last five years.

Steve Jackson, from Direct Line Home Insurance, said: “There is a risk that water in pipes could freeze. Make sure any external pipes to boilers have been lagged. Find out where your stopcock is so that in the event of a leak, you can quickly shut off your water. If you’re leaving the house for any period of time, we recommend leaving your heating on, at least 15 degrees.”

Mr Jackson went on to say that many homeowners do not believe they will be affected.

He added: “Damage to roofs was the most common claim followed by outdoor property and gardens. One in four of these customers suffered damage caused by pipes freezing, due to cold weather. One in five suffered a loss of power due to storms and flooding.

“It’s at times like these, it’s important to check on your neighbours and people less able to protect themselves from the weather.”
