Hull and East Riding Green Party members have rejected chairman Martin Deane’s resignation.

Mr Deane offered to step down after he failed to submit the party’s nominations in time for the May 5 Hull City Council elections, during which a third of its 59 seats will be contested.

But he will remain in the role after part members decided to decline his resignation at a meeting on Thursday night.

Speaking in a previous interview, Hull-based party member Angela Needham said: “Everyone is working around their jobs, Martin himself is a teacher, and there are other family commitments and all the other commitments people have, in our time. He made a mistake.

“He overlooked something, he got a date wrong in his head. By the time he realised, it was too late.

“We’ve had loads of people phoning him, emailing, texting saying, ‘we support you Martin, we absolutely don’t want you to resign. We’re behind you’.”
