It’s down to referrals, which would’ve previously been dealt with outside of the healthcare system, being added onto the waiting list.

There’s more pressure on NHS services to help those with poor mental health, according to the Chief Executive of Hull and East Yorkshire Mind.

Waiting lists are increasing due to expectations the NHS will deal with any issues children now face growing up.

David Smith from HEY Mind says young people in need are having to wait too long to be seen:

“The referrals that are being made into CAMHS services, proper mental health services, many of those are actually about emotional issues, relationship issues, growing up issues, some of the things that in years gone by would have been dealt with outside of the health service.”

He says it’s increasing the workload of services, putting those in need at risk:

“Mental health services deal with things that they were never originally set up to do; because of that, we’ve ended up with these huge waiting lists and the problem of course is that those young people who are really poorly and who really do need the help, can’t get through their waiting list.”
