One of Hull’s leading cultural landmarks has received a major boost through a grant worth half-a-million pounds.

Arts Council England’s award brings the planned upgrade of Ferens Arts Gallery closer to fruition.

Its Small Capital Fund’s investment comes just in time for the City of Culture celebrations, due to come to Hull in 2017.

It follows a fortnight on from the Government’s £1 million funding of the project.

The refurbishment will bring the gallery into line with various standards required of professional museums.

These include improvements to its display apparatus and general security, lighting, humidity and temperature.

Terry Geraghty, a Hull city councillor with special responsibilities for culture, says the authority is “delighted” with the award, which should cement its standing as a “world-class” gallery.

Steven Bayes, a city councillor who specialises in tourism, says the grant should help Ferens secure its future in the long-term. He thanked for the Arts Council for its financing.
